Spatial community vulnerability to drought disaster in Simanjiro district, Manyara region
Abstract
Globally, drought has been a major challenging issue especially in developing countries causing environmental degradation, economy crisis and loss of livelihood of the communities. Little has been done to overcome the vulnerability of these developing countries to drought disasters. The study aimed at assess the spatial vulnerability of Simanjiro District for proper preparedness and response to drought disaster. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, site observations, document review, and remote sensing techniques. Results show that Simanjiro has experienced repeated drought episodes over the past four decades. Vulnerability drivers identified were heavy reliance on rain-fed agriculture, high livestock densities, low literacy and limited access to early-warning systems and irrigation infrastructure. The study recommends strengthening early-warning systems, expand irrigation and water storage, promote agro-pastoral diversification, and improve community education and resource governance.
