The Interplay of Pricing, Quality Perception, and Global Logistics in Ultra-Fast Fashion: A Google Trends Analysis of Shein's Worldwide Consumer Interest

Abstract


Purpose

One of the most profound effects brought by the advent of ultra-fast fashion retailers, clearly exemplified by a label such as Shein, has been the disruption of the global apparel industry. Although their great success is mainly attributed to aggressive pricing and agile production, another factor, which has been underexplored until now, seems to be connected to it, namely the role of international logistics in shaping consumer perception. Therefore, the present study aims at elucidating the intricate dynamic interplay existing between consumer search interest in the core product attributes of Shein – price and quality – and the transportation and customs infrastructure underlying it. The primary objective is consequently defining the information-seeking journey the consumer engages in to determine the degree to which logistical considerations are affected by, or integrated with, core product evaluations. 

Methodology

The study leverages a 12-month dataset (from August 2023 to August 2024) of worldwide search interest showcased by Google Trends, through the adoption of a quantitative and longitudinal approach. Specifically, a tripartite analytical framework was employed, comprising time-series analysis to delineate temporal trends; Pearson correlation to quantify the strength of linear relationships; and cross-correlation analysis to determine the existence of possible intertemporal dynamics between consumer inquiries. The approach mentioned was applied to three search terms, “Shein quality”; “Shein prices”; “Transportation and customs” expressly linked to this context, so that the sequence and synchronicity of consumer interest could be modeled. 

Findings

The undertaken analysis discloses an extremely tight positive correlation (r = 0.94) between general search interest in “Shein prices” and “Shein quality”, clearly indicating that consumers evaluate these two attributes concurrently. Critically, a subtle behavioral sequence emerges wherein interest in pricing seems to slightly precede or overlap with logistical considerations, pointing to price as the initial trigger for evaluating delivery practicalities. On the contrary, quality matters showcase a co-occurrent association with the “Transportation and customs” search, suggesting that the feasibility of returns and condition upon arrival are considered simultaneously. Eventually, despite the undeniable correlations between these search terms, a direct interest in logistics remains comparatively marginal, placing it as a secondary, but still integral, element in consumer consideration. 

Research implications and limitations

The present paper contributes to enriching the literature dealing with consumer behavior and e-commerce, by empirically delineating the information-seeking pathway linked toproduct-centric and logistical inquiries. The findings validate the existence of a holistic value assessment process, confirming the theories of perceived value and risk, in which logistical aspects, even though not primary, are still considered essential secondary evaluative criteria. The limitation of the study is the reliance on aggregated andcontext-related search data, which prevents causal inference and demographic segmentation. Consequently, the general search term of "Transportation and customs" needs to be interpreted in correlation with Shein-specific queries.

Practical implications and limitations: 

For practitioners in the ultra-fast fashion sector, the results underscore the need for pursuing an integrated marketing strategy that brings together the value proposition of price with assurances of quality. The observed temporal dependency suggests that price-driven promotions should be proactively reinforced by providing consumers with transparent information on delivery timelines and customs procedures to positively manage their expectations. Concurrently, addressing quality perceptions involves the adoption of international returns policies which are clear and accessible, an aspect that is inherently logistical. The worldwide coverage of the data considered may hinder direct applicability to specific regional markets characterized by peculiar logistical and consumer profiles.

Originality: 

The novelty of this research relies on its unique application of cross-correlation analysis to public search data to carefully disassemble the consumer examination process in the ultra-fast fashion domain. Differently from product-centric studies, this paper elucidates the implicit role of global logistics and customs as a core element in the consumer's cognitive journey. It offers empirical evidence that logistical aspects are not to be considered in isolation, but are inherently triggered by and evaluated together with primary product attributes, thereby providing a more integral understanding of how value is perceived in global direct-to-consumer retail.
